Wolverines begin fall sports season

If you’re a Marquette Wolverines fan, then you’re probably excited the Red & Blue has begun its 2007 fall sports season of MJH volleyball and football. The Wolverine teams began their second season in the Twin Lakes League early this year when they traveled to Lincoln Aug. 30 for their first games of the school year. (The Tribune will have those game results next week.) Tomorrow night, Thursday, Sept. 6, the Wolverine teams will travel to Centre to play. Volleyball will begin at 5 p.m. and football will start at 6:30 p.m.

The Wolverine volleyball team boasts 18 members this season, under the direction of Head Coach Cynthia Hulse, who is now in her seventh year as the leader of the Lady Wolverines.

Although the Wolverines are slightly shorter this year, the girls are a very determined bunch with good teamwork.

“The girls have a tremendous work effort and they play very well together as a team,” said Coach Hulse.

Girls on the team who have had A-team experience and are back for their third season of volleyball, beginning as sixth graders, are eighth graders Lori James, Emily Wolf, and Perla Vivanco. Other eighth graders rounding out the team are Cecelia Gonzalez, April Young and newcomers Cree Lukat and Cassie Young. Seventh graders on the team are Tara Gladding, Megan James, Kasey Kolling, and Taylor Russell, and sixth graders out for their first season of volleyball at MJH are Mikaela Johnson, Carly Kolling, Mary Linder, Morgan Loder, Hannah McBride, Madilyn Weber and Whitney Willems.

The Wolverines are hoping to improve on their 9-4 record from 2006 when they took second place in the Twin Lakes League tournament and third place in the Solomon Invitational tournament.

Assisting Coach Cynthia Hulse with the Lady Wolverines this season is new MES fourth grade teacher Jennifer Thomas. The Lady Wolverines’ manager is Daisy Quested.

This season will be a rebuilding year for the Wolverine football team, under the direction of third year Head Coach Mike Hulse and longtime Assistant Coach James Deckard.

The Wolverines, who went 1-6 in the 2006 season, hope to bring home more wins in the Twin Lakes League.

Expected leaders this season on the eight-man football team for the Wolverines are eighth graders, Matt Wickstrom, Alex Wolf, Zeb O’Loughlin, Alfredo Sanchez, Alex Chesbro and newcomer Jose Carrillo. Seventh graders rounding out the team for their very first year of MJH football are Kyle Ryan, Tyler Peterson, Weston Loder, Caleb Walton, and Colter Krehbiel.

The Wolverines football team may be few in number, but they are hoping to pack a powerful punch against their Twin Lakes League opponents. The Wolverines will take on Centre at Centre tomorrow evening, Sept. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The first home game for the Wolverine teams is set for Thursday, Sept. 13. The Wolverines will host the Wilson Dragons at 5 p.m. for volleyball in the MES gym and at 6:30 p.m. for football at the Marquette ball field. Other teams the Wolverines will play this season are: Goessel (H) Sept. 20, Sylvan/Lucas/Luray (H) Sept. 27 (Parent Night), at Chase Oct. 4, and at Tescott Oct. 11. The Twin Lakes League volleyball tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 15 at Lincoln , beginning at 3 p.m.
